I want to talk about fear today.
Fear holds a lot of people back.
Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of loss…I could go on.
There are two main reasons for fear.
Lack of knowledge
Lets start with the first one.
When we don’t know the outcome, it can be scary. There are huge risks. If you choose to make an investment in property or stock, and it goes well, then great! You have that extra financial security. But on the flip side, you could lose your money or your house. If you choose to quit your well paying and prestigious job to pursue your passion, it could be amazing, and all your dreams come true, but what if it turns sour? What if it means you lose your cushy lifestyle?
Here’s the thing, there is no way you are ever going to know the outcome…I mean, unless you have a magic 8 ball, in which case, I might need to see you to discuss my love life. But otherwise, you won’t know. The only way to get past the unknown, is to think about all the worst case scenarios, and accept that if it does happen, you are prepared for it. Ok, maybe it means you have to downgrade, because your income had to drop in order to pursue your passion. But will it be worth it? If yes, then go for it!
And now the second one.
Lack of knowledge. Say you’re scared of flying because you’re scared of a potential plane crash. You might have had a very bad incident of horrible weather and turbulence. But if you actually research planes and accidents, you will find that chances of a plane accident is significantly lower than having an accident on the road. But we drive all the time, or we ride our bikes on the roads, or cross the streets. The fact that accidents happen more on the roads than in the air has never stopped us from driving, riding or walking. If you understand why you have this fear, research it and fully understand it, you will be able to get past it.
So ask yourself this. If you knew the unknown, and you had the knowledge, would it set you free? Would it make you more willing to put yourself out there, and take exciting adventures?
