I stayed in a hostel while I was here. I really like hostels (uncomfortable beds and lack of privacy aside), you get to meet some pretty cool people.
It was there I met Ben who was staying in the same dorm. He was 26 and had taken time off after uni to go travelling for a couple of years. He was staying in the hostel because he was getting relocated to work in the mines in inner Queensland as a mining engineer. We got to chatting, and seriously, this guy has the most incredible mind I had ever come across!
He’s one of those types who just loves to learn, and can retain information without even trying. We had a conversation on our last night at the hostel, and he said something that really stuck with me.
We were talking about insulation and how he was going to help his mum insulate her new house.
“What? How do you even know how to do that?!”
“I’ll just do some research”.
“I’d freak out about potentially burning the house down”.
“Well you can’t do that, plus I know how it all works.”
“I wouldn’t even know where to start!”
“You can learn to learn things”.
There it was; “you can learn to learn things”. So simple.
And he was right.
We always think if we don’t know how to do something, then that’s it. Hire someone to do it. But we never actually consider the fact that it can be learnt. Especially in this age of technology, it makes learning so much easier!
We always strive for progression as humans; in our professional careers, in health and fitness, relationships, but we also need to progress our minds as well.
So I implore you to go out and try to learn something new everyday or every week. Open up your brain to new things; your mind will thank you for it!
